also, my dad began a string of emails between my family, in pursuit of organizing a summer camping trip. originally addressing us as the "former campers in the mist", dad sought to place us in a woodsy hostel, out of the rain. after a round of concerns about the communal sleeping arrangements, he offered a nudist-camp alternative to which my cousin Darren replied

take it or leave it, elementary kids are the new wave.

some parents have argued otherwise, but i cant think of anything less dangerous than skatin on a wood floor with 4 lbs of padding and a helmet, the nurse's office is probably next door. yes, a hefty price for all of the equipment. if we have to think about it in terms of money, than that is a desperate position, and i would speculate that the price almost every parent pays for the equipment to enduce hours of videogame play compares quite nicely to the money a grant program spends on each set of protection that makes this controversial "sport" less dangerous.

and DAMN YEAH!! my hometown is getting a skatepark within the next year! visit the bemidji skatepark blog. the future schralping zone is just down the hill and through the woods from my parents house!!

three reasons why i have this song in my head
1. the weather; activating nostalgia about when i had to encounter the outdoors every day and get messy
2. appreciating the grunge wardrobe; not trying to impress anyone. at least for today.
3. a very long and somewhat painful critique; got me thinking about when i had dreams of being a scholar. now i dream to be back in the physical (contact-sports?) world.

Go here to watch an unplugged version of what i am talking about. I remember watching this on mtv when i was in elementary school. yknow, when i was wearing converse hightops, cutoff jean shorts and tshirts to school everyday and playing rough on the football field. the sun-warmed grass and mud had an embracing effect, for about an hour each day at recess. i remember that the late-melting snow turned in to ice piles on our field that made for pretty harsh scrapes if you really wanted to tackle the ball handler ("smear the queer" - sorry, i said it.) piling up on the ball, on the ice with 10 scrappy boys was embracing, too.

my life was i guess not so innocent back then. we all cycle through these things. i've spent about 6 years trying to convince my mom that my life is drug free, but now i ask that she at least enjoy seeing kids fucked up once and a while...

Every week a batch of emails come in from my dad.
Reminders to "keep my eye on the prize."

After clicking through a pile 20 deep that have been backed up since i started school a few weeks ago, i am reassured that although being slightly over-concerned, my dad is killing it. Links to design forums, snowboard realms, malakye, corolflot, print mag, how mag careers, various videos like prom dress rugby, some eyebrow craze, baby commercial outtakes, "my future", jobs falling. LIFE.

I asked that in order to determine the urgency or priority of his emails, that he write descriptions or messages in each email rather than just a link. Now I get a hint to the content with descriptive words such as "funny", "jobs", and "check this out". Sometimes these messages are more sentimental when really sad country music videos are sent to me and my sister. At least he has the internets to attempt filling his empty nest.

Looking at all of these emails thoroughly every week is trying, but i am so glad my dad gives a shit. And I think by now he truly understands my interests. In all of the online capacities of design, skateboarding, and snowboarding, he seen it.
