Versus

Jamie Lynn on the cover of this new snowboarding photography book.

This morning I had a dream that I was talking to the legendary snowboarder Jamie Lynn on the phone for a job interview. Although the conversation was quickly turning into a request for a snowboarding date, I was flattered but focused. The coinciding clipping path work I was doing in photoshop was meticulous and steady when prompted to "Tell me about modeling for Rome." When I answered, no I'm not a model I am a graphic designer, he replied "Oh, shit."

Could be signifying the end of my snowboarding dreams.

Up Norterese / West Coasterese

Up North with my head in West Coast right now.
Blaming it on the sinus pressure from an infection in my head.

Heart and head making amends. A work in progress.

Localvore

I'm excited to be moving to South Minneapolis and to have heard, on public radio last night, of Yeti Records neighboring my new abode. Last night their guest DJ set included Crow. Who I instantly admired. Sharing the love through the icey Minnesota storm.

If there's one thing I've ever learned, your collection of vintage clothing—all those rare pieces, heirlooms—should never be given up. Cycling back around whether its 'on trend' or just within your character. Been feeling like I've had a past life in the 60's and 70's more than ever. Glad I'm back, but wishing for a more collective sense of activism and compassion during this new generation of suffering.

WHAT WE ALL WANT

Could I be happy with something else
I need something to fill my time
Could I be happy with something else

BRING IT

BACK WEST

Through my decade of following FECALFACEDOTCOM I have been very curious about the sounds of Thee Oh Sees, after seeing many photos of their shows, looking like all the madness and creativity I expected San Francisco to be. I'm not quite sure what took so long, but finally my hands are on one of their albums. Mega-feast is nonstop and keeps me wondering, what is taking me so long to move there? John Trippe of FF confirms SF's livability here. And, now that my great pal Aimee is settled in the bay I am ever so curious. Might well be that time for me, not so long into the future!

America's next Baseball

As much as I love skateboarding, Chris Troy, kids, and analyzing people's handwriting, this cultural phenomena makes me sad. This past weekend while at Dew Tour in Boston, I sat cheering amongst adults who knew nothing about skateboarding aside from "Ryan Sheckler" and "P Rod". Their children rushing the edges of the stands as soon as a pro skater was in sight. Meanwhile I applauded Vanessa Torres, Amy Caron, Lacey Baker, Eli Reed, Bastian Salabanzo, Greg Lutzka, and Sierra Fellers and contemplated the future of skateboarding from within a giant basketball stadium. After the surprise appearances of Red Bull's Shawn White and Travis Pastrana (this guy doesnt even skateboard), who both recited "stoke" speeches, I became sentimental for the simplicity of skateboarding in a park with people. Started to resent being one of these anxious, non-skateboarding spectators. Conversely, perhaps I am glad to not be one of the skateboarders who is skating for someone/some sponsor!

I've realized how much power skateboarding has lately. It's cultural influence has reached the masses. You can find evidence of legitimate skateboarding culture in photography for Urban Outfitters catalogs, and purchase various "skateboards" at Target. There is even a "teen focused meat snack brand" involved in sponsoring these events along with various sugar-water companies. There's validity in supporting the skateboarding industry, and as a creative person I want to offer some responsibility in that. A more authentic progression of skateboarding is worth fighting for.

Happy Birthday Grandma Elhard!

This has been a big week for my Elhard family back in Minnesota. Last week my father rocked the tassel in honor of his 52nd year of life. Yesterday my younger sister was awarded with a music scholarship for the best vocal performance at Bemidji State University. Last night my uncle's high school basketball team (video below) battled to second in a championship game for the Minnesota State AAA Title, and today my grandmother celebrates her 90th birthday! Not to mention that both my parents were offered great jobs on Friday...

Yesterday I celebrated my own victory with another day of snowboarding with co-workers. A dream come true to mob around a hill with fellow members of Rome Snowboard Design Syndicate!

I just called my grandma to hear of her popular birthday party at the community center in Northome, MN. She was blaring Guy Lambardo in the background and asked if I could hear it. "We used to listen to it when we were young. There were four of us (her siblings) who spent a lot of time together then and now its just me you know." she said... The Sweetest Music This Side of Heaven for the sweetest grandma this side of heaven, thankfully.

Rome SDS

I started my dream first-job a few weeks ago and am slowly acclimating to life here. Yesterday was my first morning shred session with my coworkers, and although sore, I am really happy that snowboarding is a lot like riding a bike; after a 4 year hiatus to finish art school in Minneapolis, I had not been on a real mountain in quite some time. Stowe was beautiful, and the one run that we lapped was terrifyingly icy and fast at first, and later in the morning, soft and littered with teleskiers through the misty rays of sun...
The best part about snowboarding yesterday was coming back to the office and completing this dream full circle. I'm working on familiarizing myself with the overall identity and design system(s) and implementing them....and trying to navigate the server for the source files....and above all trying to stay "shrednasty".

This is me in my office.

El Perro Del Mar "Shelter" (by The XX) from The Control Group on Vimeo.

This is the song/video that gets me through my days lately.

And aside from my coworkers livening the atmosphere, this is what makes me laugh out load while I'm working.

Synergy Fitness day #1

I only broke one capillary in my face today in my exercise class!
The brazilian buttlift workout (formerly from P90X) is seriously in motion. While googling for some history behind (no pun intended) this program I came across many horrifying photos of the "brazilian butt lift" cosmetic surgery. Cant imagine how many capillaries were sacrificed during those procedures...

Yearly Sames.

"Still the Same"...I grew up hearing my mother play this song on the piano...

About one year ago I eagerly took my friend Aimee from art school to a Creature demo at 3rd Lair in Minneapolis. There, she learned firsthand why I admire these gnarthrashers, and why the event made a perfect fit into our maniacal school schedule as we were nearing the end of our college careers.

Lately there seems to be a powerful cycle of success going on with all of my friends. Every one is sharing in life hammers right now and I feel like I have just put an end to the first week of the rest of my life.
Hesh-in-training.

Here we are posted up with Janell Carlson, Neil Heddings and Al Partanen.

I love Skating.

I do love ice skating more than anything, and not until I took a lap on the official sized speed skating rink on Lake Bemidji, did I realize that its time for me to hang up the figure skates for a shiny pair of speed skating blades. Its certain that without grippy toepicks I'd be in the clear.

As Vain as Dreads

Uh...so I'm moving to Vermont next week because I have a job there. At Rome SDS!
To commemorate my future surroundings (hexed with hippiness) and to demonstrate having a salary, I am going to buy these shoes lickity split. Cant wait to skate them in, along with a few good pair of deep black skinny jeans although tye-dye is the new black. Hoping there is something for me to skate out there. And my apologies for keeping anyone in the dark on my stagnant blog here. A lot of things (& my things on the internet) are going to change soon. Excited to be less spatially challenged over all and off the hook of social networks....

Repost: Me with purple dreads.
