Rome SDS

I started my dream first-job a few weeks ago and am slowly acclimating to life here. Yesterday was my first morning shred session with my coworkers, and although sore, I am really happy that snowboarding is a lot like riding a bike; after a 4 year hiatus to finish art school in Minneapolis, I had not been on a real mountain in quite some time. Stowe was beautiful, and the one run that we lapped was terrifyingly icy and fast at first, and later in the morning, soft and littered with teleskiers through the misty rays of sun...
The best part about snowboarding yesterday was coming back to the office and completing this dream full circle. I'm working on familiarizing myself with the overall identity and design system(s) and implementing them....and trying to navigate the server for the source files....and above all trying to stay "shrednasty".

This is me in my office.

El Perro Del Mar "Shelter" (by The XX) from The Control Group on Vimeo.

This is the song/video that gets me through my days lately.

And aside from my coworkers livening the atmosphere, this is what makes me laugh out load while I'm working.

thought you should know

Every week a batch of emails come in from my dad.
Reminders to "keep my eye on the prize."

After clicking through a pile 20 deep that have been backed up since i started school a few weeks ago, i am reassured that although being slightly over-concerned, my dad is killing it. Links to design forums, snowboard realms, malakye, corolflot, print mag, how mag careers, various videos like prom dress rugby, some eyebrow craze, baby commercial outtakes, "my future", jobs falling. LIFE.

I asked that in order to determine the urgency or priority of his emails, that he write descriptions or messages in each email rather than just a link. Now I get a hint to the content with descriptive words such as "funny", "jobs", and "check this out". Sometimes these messages are more sentimental when really sad country music videos are sent to me and my sister. At least he has the internets to attempt filling his empty nest.

Looking at all of these emails thoroughly every week is trying, but i am so glad my dad gives a shit. And I think by now he truly understands my interests. In all of the online capacities of design, skateboarding, and snowboarding, he seen it.

This last weekend was the first Elhard Famly camping outing in the last 14 years. We went to Wirt, MN and we tried. We were rained out on the first full day. Thankfully, when Mattea and I awoke, we immediately took the opportunity to commence in our favorite activity of canoeing. It started out as a fun game, but we soon became Canoeing Conservationists on Noma Lake. We collected all these vintage cans. Most of them over 20 years old! My favorite is the Hamms can.
It was so sad to leave my family of commedians, conservationsists, and campers for the high and dry roads.
Back to Bemidji...

When we arrived, no joke, Antique Roadshow was airing a segment about vintage can collecting. This first image features the early pop-tops (my Hamm's can has the same top). On my way back to Minneapolis I stopped at this tourist attraction that I had never been to in all my years living in Bemidji. Spectacular collectibles in every corner! I picked up a few new/old touristy tees and browsed the Northern Minnesotan Zine selection on my way out...

dont ever take anything too seriously

rockaway armada, inspiring maytes.

this is the time to stay afloat, keeping our heads up toward the damned good sunshine, up into the brilliance of accomplishment. goals are pastimes, and we are seeing the end of our projects eye-to-eye.
these last few weeks of my fourth year of academia is about to suffer a suckerpunch in the gut...

avant-garde, raw energy, punk community meetz gallery exhibit? i've always wondered what kind of controversy this creates.whats the point of taking the backbone that is personal interaction out of a social, collab. project. there's nothing whitewashed walls can do...but good for them nonetheless!

on a related note, to those who also feel strongly about this please read about harrell fletcher's authentic enthusiasm describing the theories of his graduate program at portland state university.

oday, i came across a book typeset entirely in papyrus. the publishing company logo, book titles, and all. this book featured the watercolorings of the world trade center before an after the tragedy. the artist's earlier work, dating 8/31/01 was quite nice, pretty okay...but his linework into the month of september and thereafter was a trembling mess. it was a sad and often flat attempt at an artistic, landscape homage. the papryus typesettings of this book was ironically similar in personality. i guess somebody had to do it.
